I am a Singaporean composer who is not only interested in writing music, but also in responding to the world around me.
Most days, I have responses to the world around me that are probably quite inappropriate to voice openly and so I create a secret world where I can freely be, and freely comment. But more importantly, I permit myself this space where I can create a sonic - and sometimes visual - experience for my audiences where they too can depart from the(ir) situation and draw from their own experiences to take flight ; To feel, and to enter new worlds.
It is my personal journal, if you will, that I share with my public.
I love observing people in all situations and I love telling stories. (Un)fortunately my medium is music and this is what I know how to do, thus I tell stories that are - for a lack of better words - “enigmatic” and “coded”.
I sincerely believe that listening to new music in and of itself is always challenging because we all have to suspend our judgement in order to receive a coded message or even anything at all. Also particularly with music, there is a deep collective belief that it is a matter of “taste” and thus only the music I listen to and like is music and the rest is noise.
Just think about how many times have mothers’ all over the world have yelled at their children saying “turn that noise off”...
I suppose it is ok to be that way with music but what is frightening is that sometimes because we are also often that way in society…
I do not deliberately write weird noises, or deliberately try to be political in my work. I just use sounds that are attractive to me and sounds that I love to construct a piece with. I just live life, and like any other human being I have an opinion on the life lived, but because I work in the arts I aesthetisize everything. Yes, even violence.
All music is experiential and there to teach us how to feel and how to love. What I hope to do as a creator is to aim for a truthful, well constructed experience, and one that is always in relation to the world around us.
Currently residing in Paris since 2011, I am still enjoying putting dots on paper, eating great food and seizing inspiration from the city’s vibrant cultural life.
